BTS new compilation album Test debuts at number one on the Billboard 200 chart (dated June 25), earning the pop group their sixth chart top spot. The retrospective — consisting primarily of previously released material — features 314,000 album-equivalent units achieved in the US in the week ending June 16, according to Luminate. The overwhelming majority of that unit value was driven by CD album sales.
The anthology was released on June 10, four days before the group announced an indefinite “hiatus” to focus on solo endeavors. The seven-member South Korean act was formed in 2010 and made its advertising panel debut on the charts in 2013. BTS has recorded 15 entries on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Also in the new top 10, Carrie Underwood achieves her 10th consecutive top 10 album on the Billboard 200 – the entirety of her chart efforts – as her new studio release jeans and rhinestones releases in the region.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the US based on multimetric consumption measured in album equivalent units, as compiled by Luminate. Units include album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 paid/subscription-on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs on an album. Of Evidences 314,000 equivalent album units achieved, album sales comprise 266,000; SEA units comprise 36,000 (equivalent to 52.84 million official on-demand streams of the set’s tracks) and TEA units comprise 12,000.
Test records the biggest week of the year for an album by a group, in both units earned and album sales. The single biggest week overall in 2022 was Harry Styles’ debut frame harry’s housewith 521,000 units, of which 330,000 were in album sales.
Test was released as a 35-track digital download and streaming album, and a 48-track expanded CD album. The latest edition has 13 exclusive tracks – mostly demo recordings – not available on the digital album or streaming. Test it was not released in any other format, such as vinyl LP or cassette.
All versions of the album contain eight of the 13 BTS songs in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 (via the most recently published chart dated June 18), including three of the act’s six No. ” and “Butter”). Test also features three all-new tracks, including the set’s lead single, “Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)”.
As is typical with many K-pop releases, the CD edition of the album was released in elaborate collectible packs. There are two CD variants available in total: a $24 version and a $70 version (specific retailers may have lower retail prices). Both have the same tracklist, just different packaging and inner paper products (like booklets and posters). Each also contains random elements (photo cards and postcards). (Expensive CD albums aren’t new to BTS. The group’s latest new studio album, 2020’s eight tracks To bewas initially available in just two retail formats: a $9 digital album and a $50 CD.)
Test sold nearly 266,000 in traditional album sales – of which digital albums comprise 6,500. The remaining sum of just over 259,000 was all from CD sales. This marks the biggest sales week for a CD album in the US since Adele’s release. 30 sold 378,000 CDs in its first week (ending November 25, 2021; chart dated December 4, 2021). Comparatively, Adele 30 The CD was released in three variants, a 12-track standard edition ($11.98 list price), a Target-exclusive edition with three bonus tracks ($13.98), and a deluxe box set ($13.98). 40) containing the standard CD, a T-shirt and photo print. Speaking of Bad Bunny, a summer without you drops to second place on the new Billboard 200 with 129,000 equivalent album units earned (down 6%). a summer without you is the first album in nearly four years to surpass 100,000 album-equivalent units earned in each of its first six weeks. The last title to do this was Drake’s Scorpionwhich saw its first seven weeks surpass 100,000 units (stops July 28-August 25, 2018).
Harry Styles topping the charts harry’s house is a non-mover on the Billboard 200 at No. 3 with 91,000 equivalent album units (down 20%). Post Malone’s Twelve Carat Toothache drops 2-4 in its second week with 59,000 (down 51%). Rounding out the top five is Future’s former No. I never liked you, which drops 4-5 with 55,000 (down 10%). A trio of former leaders is next on the chart, like Morgan Wallen Dangerous: The double album is stuck at #6 (52,000; down less than 1%), Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers down 5-7 (42,000; down 23%) and Olivia Rodrigo Sour is constant at No. 8 (32,000; down 14%).
SZA Ctrl vaults from #35 to #9 after a June 10th anniversary deluxe reissue that added seven previously unreleased tracks. The album, which debuted and peaked at number 3 on the July 1, 2017 chart, with 32,000 equivalent album units earned (up 109%).
Closing out the new top 10 of the Billboard 200 is Carrie Underwood’s new studio album jeans and rhinestones, which debuts at No. 10 with 31,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 22,000; SEA units comprise around 9,000 (equivalent to 11.19 million official on-demand streams of the set’s tracks) and TEA units comprise less than 1,000.
jeans and rhinestones is Underwood’s tenth consecutive top 10 album – the entirety of his chart efforts. And all 10 debuted in the top 10, going back to her first release, some heartsreleased in 2005.
