Smoothies are supposed to be a healthy meal replacement, but some Daily Harvest drinkers claim they’re getting the exact opposite.
The customizable, direct-to-consumer smoothie company has issued a recall of its plant-based, protein-packed “Crumbles” made from leeks and lentils after several customers reported abdominal discomfort, reportedly leading to ER visits. and even removal of the gallbladder.
Victims first came together on social media to share their experiences, like Cosmopolitan magazine’s digital creative director Abigail Silverman, who went viral with over 830,000 views on TikTok this week after sharing her story. She claims she landed at the hospital shortly after experiencing Crumbles for the first time.
“When I was in the ER, they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me,” said Silverman, who was sent home on antibiotics. Five days later, the pain returned. “It was even worse, and I had a fever of 101.8.”
Back at the hospital, she was tested for “everything”, she recalled, including hepatitis, mono and gallstones, and also underwent a battery of tests and ultrasounds. She is now seeing a liver specialist, although her illness remains a mystery.
A subReddit for Daily Harvest shoppers also gathered several reports of high fever and “debilitating” stomach pains.
“Two weeks ago, I tried crumble for the first time,” a report began. “That night I had a debilitating stomach ache like I had never felt before. It was so bad that I had to go to the ER as a last ditch effort to relieve and control the pain. After a CT scan, IV, meds and a week on a bland diet, I thought maybe it was some kind of bug.”
They continued: “Fast forward to yesterday, I decided to try the crumbs again. And lo and behold, I’m awake with the same horrible stomachache. Fortunately, I have medication on my prescription from the last time this happened and I don’t have to go back to the ER.”
Many others responded to the post with their parallel experiences. “I have been in and out of the hospital for 5 days over the past 2 weeks with extreme abdominal pain, jaundice, elevated LFTs, etc. They continued, “I didn’t get until the email DH sent tonight offering $10 (ha!).”
One of the more extreme reports claimed organ failure due to consumption of Crumbles. “I am here with the same experience as all of you. I even had my gallbladder removed. Times for cool action guys. This is crazy. INSANE. I’m in shock.”
The plant-based product was launched just a few weeks ago as a crunchy, flavorful, protein-packed topping for Daily Harvest recipes.
Now, the product page says French Lentil + Leeks Crumbles is “temporarily discontinued” and urges stores to “discard this item and not eat it.” (Concerns about the new Walnut + Thyme Crumbles were not reported.)
The Daily Harvest did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
In a press release released on Sunday, the company confirmed that it received complaints of “gastrointestinal issues” among customers after eating Crumbles.
“Nothing matters more than the health and safety of our customers and we deeply value the trust you place in us and our food every day,” began the statement, which urged consumers to continue to report discomfort and illness associated with their food. products.
In an update on Wednesday, Daily Harvest continued: “We are taking this very seriously and doing everything we can to get to the bottom of this. Your health and well-being are our priority.”
They go on to describe their current investigative measures, claiming they first “acted immediately and issued a voluntary recall” as soon as they heard the alarming reports and contacted customers directly to let them know.
They are now “working closely with the [Food and Drug Administration] and with several independent labs” as well as “experts to help us get to the bottom of this”.
“All pathogen and toxicology results have been negative so far, but we continue to do extensive testing and will keep you updated,” they added.
