Kylie Minogue Said Kylie Jenner’s Trademark Lawsuit “Had To Be Done”

In 2017, the Aussie popstar came out on top after the two Kylies became embroiled in a legal dispute after Kylie Jenner tried to trademark her first shared name.

Very few go head to head with the Kardashians and come out on top. However, one woman who has done just that and lived to tell the tale is Kylie Minogue.

In 2017, the pop star managed to stop the youngest member of the KarJenner clan, Kylie Jenner, from registering her shared first name.

The infamous legal battle began in April 2015 when Jenner filed a trademark application for the name “KYLIE” in the US for “advertising” and “endorsement services”.

Minogue – who has been identified by her first name for much of her career – was made aware of the trademark application and was not accepting anything.

The Australian singer and her team quickly filed a countersuit in February 2016, arguing that Jenner’s trademark would likely cause “confusion” and risk damage to Mingoue’s brand and reputation.

After much back and forth, Minogue’s lawsuit was a success, and Jenner’s application was rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2017.

While Jenner never talked much about the battle, Minogue made it clear during a 2018 interview with Rolling Stone that the lawsuit was “nothing personal” towards the young reality star.

“I never met Kylie Jenner. I’ve never met any family members – in fact, I’ve only met Kendall in passing at a fashion event – but I honestly don’t know them,” Minogue told the magazine.

Now, the triumphant Kylie is back and doubling down on the move, telling Andy Cohen during an appearance on Watch what happens live that the process was “business only”.

“When I called myself Kylie, I think I met a person older than myself named Kylie,” she began after being probed on the matter by an onlooker. “So it’s kind of unusual.”

“I spent my entire life protecting my brand and building my brand, so it was just something that had to be done,” he said, prompting Andy to agree.

Keeping her cards close to her chest, Minogue even hinted at a possible deal between the two parties.

“Let me also say that we came to an agreement,” the singer said with a revealing smile.

Smiling back at her, Andy Cohen took the opportunity to dig a little deeper, asking if Minogue has ever come face-to-face with a certain celebrity.

“Oh my God,” Andy said. “You had to call Kris Jenner and say, ‘Let me tell you something…’”

Playing it cool, Minogue revealed that she never had any direct contact with Kris during the process, instead telling Andy she would “love to meet” the famous family.

Of course, if you’ve followed the process in real-time, you’ll recall that Minogue’s team dismissed Jenner as a “reality show secondary personality” who appeared as “a supporting character” on her family’s show, Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Although the singer’s fans loved the joke at the time, Minogue later said she felt hurt because people were quick to attribute the quote to her.

“Can you imagine me saying that?!” Minogue told Rolling Stone, insisting that her lawyers were the ones who branded Jenner a minor character.

“It was a shame that this is how these lawyers talk. So I really hope it gets understood: it certainly didn’t come from me,” she clarified.

“The good news is that it’s all settled, we didn’t have to go to court. It’s all done,” Minogue concluded, adding, “I’m sure I’ll meet them one day.”

Well, we don’t know about you, but a Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Minogue collaboration seems like the best way to really end the feud – two Kylies are better than one, right?
