“The sick, the dying… and the dead!” consolidates a furious return to the form that began with the Grammy– winning “Dystopia”while advancing musically and scoring mustaine‘s recent triumph over throat cancer. gathering visionary MEGADETH leader and sonic architect Dave Mustaine with co-producer Chris Rakestraw (DANZIG, DRIVING PARKING), who together directed the 2016’s “Dystopia”the album was recorded in mustainehome studio in Nashville, Tennessee, with guitarist Kiko Loureiro and drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Bass player Steve Di Giorgio intervened temporarily to record the album. With the kick-off of MEGADETHrecent tour, MEGADETH alumni James Lo Menzo rejoined the MEGADETH family as permanent bass player.
“For the first time in a long time, everything we needed on this album is in its place”, Dave Mustaine excited. “I can’t wait for the public to get a hold of this!”
Introducing some of mustainethe strongest compositions by , while also incorporating the composition of the rest of the band, “The sick, the dying… and the dead!” brings together everything that is exciting and distinctive about MEGADETH. From the exhilarating throwback fury of “Night Pursuers” (with icon Iced tea) and first single “We will be back”for the more mid-tempo and melodic “Soldier in!” and the very personal title track, with its fascinating twists. “The sick, the dying… and the dead!” also comes with a cover KENNEDYS DEAD‘ “Police Truck” and Sammy Hagarin “This planet is on fire”the latter of which includes vocals from agar himself.
“The sick, the dying… and the dead!” combines ultra-frenetic riffs, fiercely intricate solos and the adventurous spirit the quartet is known for, all laced with unique virtuosity and precision and mustainethe singular sardonic growl of . This album combines all the overwhelming musical motifs that made MEGADETH both echo metal’s disruptors and revered flag-bearers of the genre.
mustaine talked about “Night Pursuers” in an interview earlier this year with Jose Mangin of SiriusXM liquid metal. He said: “It’s a brutal song. I can’t remember if it was the fastest [on the new album] or not. But ‘Night Pursuers’ it’s about the US Army’s 160th Battalion, and it’s all the black-ops helicopters that come in at night – nobody knows they’re there; they’re in, they’re out. and i had my friend Iced tea join me in a part in the middle of this ’cause Ice was an army ranger, and he did two tours in Afghanistan, I think he did. I think it was in 1991, when I met him. It might have been a little earlier than that, but I know he was a ranger. And I had just done something on his last record. But when I asked him, I thought it would be great to have him because of his bravery and the fact that he has real credibility as someone who was there. And then we have a bunch of other guys to join the track just to make it as real as possible. We go down to the base to shoot a bunch of helicopter scenes and sounds and stuff like that. We’ve got three videos that we’re making for this record right now in Brazil, and we’re combining all of that production and the base stuff, with the helicopters and everything together, to make this first three-song video offering.”
About agarthe contribution of “This planet is on fire”, mustaine said SiriusXMin “Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk”: “It’s a super heavy song. And the good thing about it [is] we didn’t just make the music; [Sammy] played on it too. So we have a little guitar; we have a lot of little corner. I think it’s super cool.”
As for MEGADETHthe decision to cover “Police Truck”, mustaine said, “It’s no secret that I’m a great KENNEDYS DEAD fan, and I wanted to do ‘Vacation in Cambodia’but my friends LOCK THE ROCK had done it, and I felt that [I would] just let them have their glory in this version of this song, and if the time comes, i’m sure there’s another song that will stand out in me. And there was – was the music ‘Police truck’. So we recorded it.”
