Newsroom – American Airlines Launches Mobile ID with TSA PreCheck®

Travelers can now enjoy a more convenient trip verification experience through facial recognition

  • No more fumbling with an ID or boarding pass, American Airlines Mobile ID unlocks a more seamless, contactless travel experience.
  • Customers can create their secure American Airlines Mobile ID with TSA PreCheck® membership, AAdvantage® number, plus a US driver’s license or passport for a streamlined security experience.
  • The option to use a driver’s license or passport provides ample accessibility for travelers to experience the next milestone in easy travel.

FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines customers with TSA PreCheck® can now pass through the airport with just their phone and face, thanks to a collaboration with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and American to test mobile identification.

Starting today at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), American Airlines AAdvantage® members enrolled in TSA PreCheck can choose to use their American Airlines Mobile ID at selected TSA PreCheck checkpoints to have their identity verified. The experience is now available at all TSA PreCheck locations in DFW, with plans to roll out at select TSA PreCheck checkpoints at Miami International Airport (MIA), Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), Washington Reagan National Airport ( DCA) and more later this year.

“We’re committed to making our customers’ travel easier, and airport waypoints offer significant opportunities for innovation,” said Julie Rath, American’s vice president of customer experience, loyalty and marketing. “By streamlining the process of verifying identity and other points at the airport, we are helping our customers to exchange stress for convenience and time savings, and propelling the travel industry on the path to a truly seamless customer experience.”

perfect security

Creating and storing your American Airlines Mobile ID is simple. Prior to travel, American Airlines customers with TSA PreCheck who choose to participate in this program must:

  • Download the Airside digital identity app on an iOS or Android device
  • Take a picture of their face
  • Scan your driver’s license or passport with the app*
  • Enter American Airlines AAdvantage number

The app then:

  • Verifies customer information using mobile identification technology developed by Thales to match against each state’s Department of Motor Vehicles records or the NFC chip embedded in the passport.
  • Securely stores the customer’s American Airlines Mobile ID on their mobile device until they choose where and when to share it.

As they pass through security, customers simply present a QR code on their phone and consent to sharing their American Airlines mobile ID with the TSA. After sharing their Mobile ID, customers look at a camera on TSA PreCheck checkpoint. The TSA’s computer system then compares the customer’s encrypted image with their American Airlines mobile ID. The entire process at the airport normally takes less than five seconds.

Once verified, TSA erases the encrypted digital ID from their checkpoint readers and customers keep their digital ID on their device until they are ready to use it at another waypoint, such as an airport lounge.

booming innovation

Today’s launch was informed by previous tests of digital ID that American introduced in 2021 for touch-free baggage delivery and Admirals Club entry in DFW. US customers participating in these trials have the option to use facial recognition technology instead of presenting a government-issued ID, boarding pass or co-branded credit card to check their luggage or enter the lounge. As a passport or driver’s license is accepted, this test provides broad accessibility for travelers to experience this next milestone in easy travel and offers a scalable solution for future home security touchpoints.

“We are grateful for the collaboration and support of our stakeholders in pushing the industry forward to deliver innovative security checkpoint solutions to help customers travel safely,” said Kriste Jordan-Smith, Federal Director of Security, DFW Airport, for TSA. “We will continue to take an agile approach to developing a safe and stress-free travel experience for TSA PreCheck passengers and look forward to expanding this technology in the future.”

In the future, American will roll out similar technology at additional kiosks, checked baggage and domestic boarding gates. US customers can already verify their identities through face matching provided by US Customs and Border Protection at various international departure gates today.

*Drivers’ licenses from states that are part of the AAMVA DLDV program and US passports are eligible.
