Obi wan Kenobi Spoilers for episode 6 follow.
Since then Obi wan Kenobi revealed his trick by focusing on Leia, Star Wars fans have wondered how in the galaxy this fits with canon.
We are, of course, talking about Leia’s message to Obi-Wan in A new hope which she begins by saying, “General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars”. A little weird that she didn’t say, “Years ago, you kept saving me after I didn’t do what you said and got caught.”
The message suggested that Leia had no personal connection to Obi-Wan, but we now know that’s not true as they went through six episodes of adventure together. Obi wan Kenobi writer and executive producer Joby Harold had promised fans answers.
“We’ve talked a lot about this. And we’re looking forward to the show being aired in its entirety so that all questions are answered fully,” he joked. “But yeah, all I can say is that we’re very aware of that and the canon.”
And now that the ending has come, we know that Harold was/wasn’t true to his word. form up spoilers forward as we delve deeper Obi wan Kenobi‘s final episode (well, unless there is a second season for the planned limited series).
the final episode of Obi wan Kenobi is largely torn between two conflicts: Obi-Wan versus Vader and Reva’s pursuit of Luke on Tatooine.
Vader initially appears to have the upper hand over Obi-Wan during their epic duel after he literally gains ground by burying Obi-Wan. Thinking about Luke and Leia gives Obi-Wan the strength to go out and hit Vader, breaking his helmet for an emotional conversation with his former padawan.
“I’m sorry, Anakin. For all of this,” Obi-Wan tells him, with Vader replying, “I’m not your failure, Obi-Wan. You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker. I did. Just as I. will destroy you. you.”
After saying goodbye to Vader (but not killing him, because canon), Obi-Wan senses that Luke is in danger on Reva’s Tatooine, so he rushes to that planet. He didn’t need to hurry, as Reva couldn’t hurt Luke, seeing the error of his ways.
Reva brings Luke back to Owen and Beru, with Obi-Wan having already joined them. Reva opens up to Obi-Wan about failing her fellow young men who were slaughtered, but Obi-Wan assures her that “by showing mercy, you gave them peace”. Awww.
Obi-Wan tells Reva that she is now “free” like him and she can choose her own path going forward. With that, the season’s main plot lines are wrapped up, so the final episode turns to resolving a handful of potentials. Star Wars holes in the plot.
First, if Vader is so committed to tracking down Obi-Wan during this season, why doesn’t he seem so concerned about timing? A new hope dove? Enter a surprise appearance from Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), who has some wise words for his apprentice.
“I wonder if your thoughts are clear on this, Lord Vader. Perhaps your feelings for your former master have weakened you. If your past cannot be overcome…” Palpatine warns, but Vader interrupts him: “Kenobi doesn’t mean nothing. I serve only you, my Master.”
Now about Leia and why she pretends not to know Obi-Wan when she sends the message A new hope. Obi-Wan comes to visit Leia and, in a moving speech, tells her of the qualities she has inherited from her parents.
Leia asks him if she’ll see him again, leading to crucial (and expected) dialogue that explains the potential plot hole. “Maybe someday. If you need help from a tired old man,” he replies. “But we must be careful. No one must know, or it could endanger both of us.”
Their exchange also ends with Leia calling Obi-Wan by his real name instead of Ben, as she has said throughout the season thus far, ending how she knew he was Obi-Wan at the end of it. A new hope message.
After talking to Leia, Obi-Wan returns to Tatooine (accumulating the space miles in this episode) to tell Owen that he now knows it’s best for Luke that he be left alone. This convinces Owen to let Obi-Wan talk to Luke, and obviously he opens with the iconic line, “Hello.”
We no longer see Obi-Wan’s exchange with Luke, but it does explain how Luke meets Ben in A new hope and why Owen was apparently persuaded to let him be in Luke’s life. He even reveals that Obi-Wan gave Luke his T-16 Skyhopper toy, if you wanted to know.
the final episode of Obi wan Kenobi puts a bow on everything you might be concerned about in the canon, so if it ends here, at least there’s nothing that Star Wars fans have to speculate about.
Then again, Qui-Gon Jinn’s surprise appearance teasing that Obi-Wan has “a way to go” in the episode’s final scene could mean that Obi-Wan will be back in the future…
