“Bring down my wife?!”
Over the course of his brilliant career, Tom Hanks has earned a reputation as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, with no one really seeming to have a bad word against him.
He is known for his calm and friendly personality, and is generally able to remain calm even in stressful situations.
However, everyone has their limits and Tom’s is his wife, Rita Wilson, with whom he has been married for 34 years and has three children.
The couple met on the set of the comedy Real friends in 1981 and have been seriously loved ever since.
For her part, actress and singer Rita is undoubtedly used to the fanfare of going out in public with her husband.
But things were more turbulent than usual when she and Tom left for New York on Wednesday.
The duo had dinner at a nearby restaurant after attending a screening of their new film, Elvisin the early evening.
However, a swarm of fans and paparazzi swarmed outside the restaurant and immediately surrounded them as they left.
In a video that circulated online, Tom and Rita were initially characteristically calm as they walked through the crowd desperately trying to take selfies and videos with Tom.
As Tom walked a few steps behind his wife, the night changed as some of the fans apparently got too engrossed in the actor to watch where they were going and bumped into each other – consequently causing Rita to stumble.
Rita could be heard screaming as she lost her balance and turned to face the crowd as she said, “Stop it!”
Tom’s protective side also came out, with the star rushing in to check on Rita before scolding fans for their behavior.
Addressing the entire swarm, Tom shouted, “My wife?! Back the fuck! Take down my wife?!”
He and Rita then got into a waiting car, with the group mumbling their apologies as they processed what had just happened.
Needless to say, the clip went viral online and sparked an important conversation about the way celebrities are treated when out in public.
The overwhelming majority supported Tom’s response in criticizing the group for not treating the couple like humans.
“Seeing these people pissing off @tomhanks and his wife in that video really makes me sick. Remember they are not celebrities, they are human beings… Respect them. Be kind,” one person tweeted.
“I would probably cry if Tom Hanks yelled at me. I’m replaying this clip to see who was to blame. You shouldn’t harass celebrities or get so close to them for a non-consensual selfie,” wrote another. Someone agreed: “If you made Tom Hanks upset with you. Well, you must be being a real idiot. Getting excited about seeing celebrities is one thing, but invading their space and almost tripping over their loved ones is another level of madness!”
“Tom Hanks was completely right. Celebrity or not, everyone is entitled to personal space and when you step over that space and trip Tom Hanks’ wife, you deserve to be put in her shoes and feel ashamed,” added a fourth.
Others were shaken by the change in Tom’s personality, with many admitting they’d be filled with “shame” if they were the ones pissing off the notoriously friendly star.
“If Tom Hanks screamed and looked at me like that, I think I would be ashamed forever,” wrote one person. Another echoed: “Imagine being the person who makes Tom Hanks get to that level of anger. I would never go out in public again.”
“Imagine being yelled at by Tom Hanks. He’s the nicest guy ever. I would probably cry,” another person tweeted. And one more said: “Tom Hanks is, by all accounts, one of the nicest people on the whole fucking planet. How dare someone make their lovely wife feel insecure and then try to shame him for protecting her? Stan this amazing human ALWAYS.”
And this social media user summed it up best when he tweeted, “Just a public service announcement on behalf of anyone who knows a celebrity personally. Don’t be an idiot or overly aggressive. Be respectful and treat them the way you would like to be treated. Talk to them like you would talk to your parents. @tomhanks deserves the same reverence.”
Advice that everyone should probably take.
