Woman leaves groom’s birthday party after seeing his ‘fake’ expensive gift: ‘He has no remorse’

A woman is wondering if she should have called her boyfriend on her birthday.

She went to Reddit “Am I the A******? (AITA)” for advice. Her fiancé comes from a wealthy family that pressures her to behave a certain way. On her birthday, her family was worried that she wouldn’t buy him an expensive enough gift. When she opted for something handmade, things exploded at her birthday party.

“My fiancé (female, 24) (male, 25) comes from a wealthy family, unlike me,” she explained. “Your family might be a little obsessed with looks and status. He’s the only child, so his parents spoil him all the time. He once told me that his mother thinks I should consider wearing designer clothes and makeup, especially when attending family events where important people are present. He said he would pay for everything, but I have a specific style/brand, and I’m comfortable with that, but I’ve separated some looks to wear on visits.

“On his birthdays, they go overboard with the celebration, and on his 25th birthday, they booked a restaurant for the occasion and sent out invitations. I heard that within the invitations they included a list of acceptable/expensive gifts to take away. His mom sent me one, which made me like, WTF? I called her, and she apologetically said, ‘Well, he REALLY wants this. He will be disappointed if he doesn’t get it. I told her it really is between him and [me]. I decided to present him with a handmade gift, which was a floral frame for our future wedding photo to put on the counter. He said his parents wouldn’t be happy and would think I’m being mean. He’d offered to buy him a pair of expensive Nikes, and all I had to do was act like I’d bought them for him in front of his parents to get them off our backs. I declined and said this is my gift and [that] I will not pretend.”

But on the day of the birthday party, her boyfriend went behind her back.

“At the party and when he was opening presents I found out he opened a box and took out his Nike shoes and acted emotional thanking me for having them for him,” she wrote. “I was confused. I said this wasn’t my gift and started looking for it among the other gifts. I asked where he put the floral frame, and he made a fool of himself. I got so mad. I told him in front of me. from his parents that he shouldn’t have lied about what I originally gave him and that if he was ashamed of it then I [would] be guarding. His family and friends were silently watching. His mom tried to follow me out, but I got in an Uber and left.

“He texted me and was livid saying he was just trying to protect me from his family’s criticism of the handmade gift I was planning to give him and said I could have played along and [gotten] ended it. Instead, I exposed him when he was just trying to make his family understand that I’m not being mean. I went to stay with a friend and I still haven’t spoken to him after that. I’ve told him about how his family is behaving, and he agrees they can be a little superficial at times, but he’s also said he’s nothing without them and can’t argue with them after all they’ve done for him.”

Redditors didn’t think the couple handled the situation well.

“BF is AH for pulling off his fake gift antics even when OP didn’t agree with this deal and said he wouldn’t fake it,” one user commented.

“He is upset with [being] called for it but he has no remorse,” one person wrote.

“You are incompatible. It’s not that you’re different – it’s that you’re not willing to compromise,” someone added.
